World Energy and Environment Forum launched to advance net zero transition

VOV.VN - The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), in coordination with the World Energy Council Vietnam (WEC-VN), launched the World Energy and Environment Vietnam 2026 Forum on March 20 in an effort to facilitate the country’s green transition and achieve the 2050 net zero goal.

The forum is scheduled to take place on June 11–12, and is expected to serve as a platform connecting policymakers, markets and the business community to accelerate the country’s energy transition toward green growth and net-zero emissions.

The initiative comes at a time when climate change has become an increasingly pressing global challenge, compounded by geopolitical uncertainties that are affecting energy security, production costs and supply chains. For Vietnam, achieving net-zero emissions is no longer optional but is emerging as a new development benchmark, requiring a comprehensive restructuring of the growth model toward sustainability.

Vietnam is facing a dual challenge - maintaining strong economic growth while adapting to climate change and fulfilling its international commitments on emissions reduction. The country’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 calls for a fundamental transformation toward a greener and more inclusive development model.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Nguyen Quang Vinh, vice president of VCCI and chairman of the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD), emphasised that the green transition is not only an environmental imperative but also a strategic opportunity to enhance national competitiveness, attract high-quality investment and create new growth drivers.

The business community should play a central role in leading the journey toward net zero, he said.

In recent years, Vietnam has made progress in improving institutional frameworks and policies on green growth and energy transition, including active participation in international initiatives such as the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). However, several bottlenecks remain, including limited investment resources, gaps in core technologies, incomplete emissions measurement systems and uneven implementation capacity at the local level. The private sector has yet to be fully mobilized as a driving force for the transition.

The forum, Vinh said, is expected to provide a multi-stakeholder dialogue platform involving businesses, government agencies, local authorities and international experts. Key activities will include thematic discussions on energy and environmental issues, a recognition programme honouring outstanding sustainable energy and environmental initiatives based on international evaluation criteria, and an exhibition on green transition. The exhibition will connect businesses with investors, green finance institutions and expert networks to help translate green transition projects into reality.

According to the VCCI official, the forum will also serve as a space for sharing knowledge and practical experiences from multinational corporations and Vietnamese enterprises in energy efficiency, renewable energy development and biodiversity conservation. This is anticipated to support businesses and localities in adopting practical solutions and advancing concrete actions toward net-zero goals.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, chair of WEC-VN, called on government agencies, enterprises and partners to actively participate and become part of the global energy network moving toward net zero. She noted that in a rapidly evolving transition landscape, advantages will belong to those who can connect early and act effectively.

Through the forum, WEC-VN also aims to introduce international standards and assessment tools into Vietnam’s energy transition process, contributing to the development of practical and sustainable transition pathways aligned with the country’s capabilities, she stressed.

Beyond recognising exemplary models, the forum is set to help build an ecosystem that supports businesses in green transformation, bridging the gap between policy design and implementation capacity. It is seen as an important step toward advancing a circular economy and fostering sustainable and inclusive growth in Vietnam.
