VinSpeed steps up construction on key sections of Ben Thanh–Can Gio Railway
VOV.VN - VinSpeed and its main construction consortium have begun simultaneous construction of key sections of the Ben Thanh–Can Gio high-speed railway in Ho Chi Minh City, with up to 10,000 workers, engineers and technical staff expected to be mobilised during peak periods.
VinSpeed High-Speed Rail Investment and Development JSC and the Vinhomes–SGC main contractor consortium launched the expanded construction programme in Tan My ward, Ho Chi Minh City, on October 30. The works will be carried out at multiple locations along the route, including Ben Thanh underground station, the Saigon Port area, and the Rach Dia and Ong Doi bridges, as well as approach bridges for the Can Gio main bridge.
The project is expected to strengthen transport links between central Ho Chi Minh City and Can Gio, supporting the development of the southern coastal area and its tourism and service industries.
Ben Thanh underground station, the railway’s starting point, is one of the project’s most technically demanding components. The station will be more than 565 metres long, with an excavation pit approximately 34 metres deep, and will connect with Ben Thanh Station on Metro Line 1. Construction in the existing urban environment requires careful coordination and stringent technical controls.
At Saigon Port, a tunnel section measuring more than 2,019 metres will be excavated using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with a diameter of 13 metres.
Another major component is the Can Gio main bridge across the Soai Rap River. Designed as a cable-stayed bridge with a steel truss girder, it will feature two A-shaped pylons, a main span of 360 metres and approximately 4.4 kilometres of approach bridges on both sides.
Construction of the Can Gio depot and other major bridges along the route will also be prioritised in the coming period.
Representatives of the investor said Vingroup and VinSpeed would mobilise maximum financial, human, technological and equipment resources to carry out construction efficiently and urgently. They pledged to maintain strict quality controls and meet requirements on safety, engineering, aesthetics and environmental protection, with the aim of completing the project on schedule.
In his remarks, Hoang Nguyen Dinh, vice chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, emphasised that the Ben Thanh-Can Gio railway was a strategically important infrastructure project that would expand the city's development space, improve transport connectivity and unlock Can Gio's potential in marine-based economic activities, tourism and services, creating a new growth driver for the city.
Dinh called on Vingroup and VinSpeed to select and mobilise qualified and experienced domestic and international contractors and explore partnerships with the world's leading railway technology groups.
He also urged the establishment of a domestic and international expert advisory panel to oversee the project, provide technical reviews and promptly propose solutions for technically demanding and complex components, including power supply, signalling and automatic train control systems.
Under the plan, localities are expected to complete the handover of all land required for the project in the fourth quarter of 2026. Construction is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2028, followed by trial runs ahead of the railway's entry into commercial operation in 2029.
