Vingroup’s VinSpeed inks high-speed rail deal with Siemens Mobility

VinSpeed, an infrastructure arm of Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, signed a strategic partnership and technology transfer agreement on high-speed rail development with Siemens Mobility GmbH, a subsidiary of Germany’s Siemens AG, in Hanoi on December 17.

Under the pact, Siemens Mobility, a supplier of high-speed rail technologies and solutions, will design, supply and integrate trainsets and key railway subsystems, including signaling, communications and power supply. It will also cooperate in maintenance for supplied equipment and transfer technology to support VinSpeed’s rail projects.

Both sides also entered into a framework agreement on the supply of trains and relevant systems for the planned Hanoi–Quang Ninh high-speed line and the Ben Thanh–Can Gio route.

Siemens Mobility plans to supply its Velaro Novo trainsets, its latest-generation high-speed platform. Velaro Novo is a distributed-power electric multiple unit with a maximum operating speed of 350 km/h. Its wider carbody and optimised “empty tube” architecture deliver at least 10% greater passenger capacity than prior models and others currently in service, boosting comfort and per-trip revenue potential for operators.

Energy consumption is about 30% lower than earlier generations, helping curb emissions and operational costs. The platform also features superior gradient-climbing performance, suiting it to varied landscapes ranging from mountains and urban zones to coastal areas.

The Velaro Novo incorporates ETCS Level 2 signaling paired with Automatic Train Operation (ATO). This setup improves safety, optimises power usage and enables higher service frequency, meeting the efficiency needs of the future Hanoi-Quang Ninh and Ben Thanh-Can Gio high-speed rail lines.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility GmbH, said the turnkey project, combining state-of-the-art rail infrastructure technology with advanced rolling stock, is poised to transform rail travel for millions of people. It would considerably improve passenger experience and quality of life, while unlocking broader industry opportunities and fueling sustained growth in regional economy, tourism and industry.

As part of Vingroup's infrastructure pillar, VinSpeed was established with the mission to pioneer the development of high-speed rail and modern transport infrastructure projects in Vietnam.
