Vietnam’s labour productivity: lowest in the region
(VOV) - The International Labour Organisation (ILO) recently announced that labour productivity in Vietnam is among the lowest in the Asia – Pacific region.
A survey conducted last year showed that it was 15 times lower than Singapore, 11 times lower than Japan, and 10 times lower than the Republic of Korea (RoK). It was just one-fifth of Malaysia and two-fifth of Thailand.
Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Doan Mau Diep said four countries – Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar – are less developed than other regional countries so it is not surprised that their labour productivity is low.
Diep said the figure was not put forward by any Vietnamese agencies but based on a technical report at the APEC Agricultural Ministerial Meeting. Labour productivity is counted in a simple way: GPD per the number of workers. The figure does not accurately reflect labour productivity of working-age people.
Diep added that productivity of Vietnamese workers at Korean businesses is not lower than that of their Korean co-workers.
The Government has asked the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) to work with relevant ministries and departments to accurately assess the productivity of Vietnamese workers, Diep said.
“We should also not please with the unemployment rate of 1.84% because two-third of Vietnamese employees are working at vulnerable fields and not paid insurance,” Diep said.
