Vietnamese fisheries set to expand global reach through MoU with USSEC

VOV.VN - The Vietnam Fisheries Society (VINAFIS) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC) on October 13 in Hanoi to promote sustainable development of Vietnam’s fisheries amid deepening global integration.

Under the MoU, the two sides will collaborate on initiatives to advance sustainable aquaculture and fisheries practices, support the adoption of international certifications such as the US Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP), and encourage the use of US soybean in aquafeed production to enhance product quality, reduce environmental impact, and boost competitiveness.

A key highlight of the cooperation is the joint organization of the International Fisheries Nutrition Workshop at VINAFIS EXPO 2026, which will bring together leading global experts to share knowledge, practical experience, and cutting-edge nutritional solutions. The workshop aims to help Vietnamese farmers and enterprises optimize costs, improve production efficiency, and pursue green, sustainable growth.

Amid the US government’s recent announcement of new reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10% to 41%, including a 20% rate applied to imports from Vietnam, the cooperation between VINAFIS and USSEC is seen as a timely move to help Vietnam’s fisheries sector adapt to international trade fluctuations.

Compared with competitors such as Ecuador, Thailand, and Indonesia, Vietnamese seafood faces the highest tariff levels and numerous technical barriers. Strengthening cooperation, enhancing supply chain transparency, and applying environmentally friendly raw materials will help Vietnamese fisheries maintain competitive advantages and expand into new markets.

Dr. Dominique P. Bureau, USSEC’s Fisheries Nutrition Specialist, noted that US soybean meal has a carbon footprint of only 653 kg CO₂ per ton, significantly lower than other sources from Brazil or Argentina.

Using US soybean not only reduces emissions and optimizes costs but also helps businesses meet international standards such as ASC, BAP, and GlobalGAP, while supporting comprehensive sustainable development.

As the leading sectoral organization, VINAFIS continually seeks to expand international cooperation, foster networking, and transfer technology to elevate Vietnam’s fisheries on the global stage.

The MoU signing with USSEC marks a crucial first step, opening up new opportunities for Vietnamese seafood to reach higher markets and reinforce the green‑sustainable, globally integrated Vietnamese seafood brand.
