Vietnamese aquatic exports to Russia enjoy rebound

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s seafood exports to Russia have started to gain momentum following a period of suspension caused by the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to details given by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Specifically, the country's aquatic exports to the Russian market in March and April declined by 86% and 46%, respectively, due to congestion in transportation and difficulties in relation to payment methods.

However, seafood exports to the Eastern European country have gradually recovered since May and began to increase sharply by 36% and 98% in July and August, respectively.

The first eight months of the year witnessed Vietnamese seafood exports to Russia reach over US$94 million, representing a decline of 20% compared to the same period from last year.

Le Hang, deputy director of the VASEP's Training and Trade Promotion Centre, revealed that tra fish (pangasius) remained the most popular export item, duly accounting for 22% of total seafood export turnover to Russia with a value reaching roughly US$21 million, thereby representing an annual decrease of 12%.

While almost all seafood products to Russia endured a downturn due to the ongoing conflict, the export of yellowfin, tuna, and anchovies to the Russian market have maintained positive growth.

In relation to the figure, tuna exports surged by 97% to nearly US$16 million, while yellowtail exports increased by 6% to US$14.6 million. Anchovy exports also soared by 27% to US$4.6 million.

Duong Hoang Minh, Vietnamese Trade Counselor in Russia, analysed that there remains plenty of room to boost Vietnamese exports to the Russian market moving forward, particularly as the Eastern European country enjoys a trade surplus of roughly US$70 billion with a number of advantages in payment methods.
