Vietnam to develop first 3.500 MW offshore wind farm project

VOV.VN - The developers of the 3.5 GW La Gan offshore wind farm project in Binh Thuan province, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Asia Petroleum Energy, and Novasia Energy, have signed two contracts with the Northern Center for Planning and Investigation of Marine Resources and Environment (CPIM).

Featuring a capacity of 3,500 MW, the La Gan offshore wind farm project in the Southeastern province is expected to become one of the first large-scale offshore wind power projects in the country.

The two contracts are worth several million US$, including the La Gan Geophysical Survey Campaign Contract and the La Gan Geological Study Contract, both of which will cover major geological surveys and studies.

Upon addressing the signing ceremony, Danish Ambassador to Vietnam Kim H. Christensen emphasised that the signing of these survey contracts indicates the willingness of investors to provide both financial and technical support to the implementation of the La Gan offshore wind farm project in the earliest time.

The Danish diplomat therefore expressed his hope that the scheme will offer fresh impetus to the entire energy sector whilst simultaneously contributing to meeting the Government's vision to develop the energy industry in both a green and sustainable manner.

Back in February, La Gan Wind Power Project Development Joint Stock Company had signed four Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at providing foundation supply and harbour services.

Accordingly, the La Gan offshore wind farm project's objective is to secure the nation’s long-term energy needs whilst supporting Binh Thuan province’s industrial sector to develop in a sustainable manner.

When it is eventually put into operation at full capacity, the La Gan offshore wind farm project will provide electricity to more than seven million Vietnamese households annually, whilst helping to reduce CO2 emissions by 130 million metric tonnes, according to international experts.
