Vietnam spends US1.49 billion on importing meat

VOV.VN - Vietnam imported approximately 680,000 tonnes of meat and meat products worth US$1.49 billion in 2022, a decline of 6.1% in volume and up 7.3% in value year on year, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

Statistics show India became Vietnam’s largest meat supplier with more than 151.000 tonnes worth US$482.98 million, up 49.8% in volume and 49.9% in value year on year.

Apart from India, Hong Kong (China), Thailand, Belgium, France, and Laos were among the main exporters of meat and meat products to the Vietnamese market.

The main imports were fresh, chilled or frozen pork, buffalo meat, and beef meat.

As a result, the country recorded a trade deficit of over US$1.35 billion in terms of meat import last year.

While meat import turnover reached billions of US dollar, the domestic livestock industry is also struggling due to the price of animal feed increasing, although the output price has recorded a decrease.

In January, the price of domestic live hog and pork did not change much.

In the northern region, the average price of live hog is about VND51,000 to VND53,000 per kg, down VND1,000 to VND2,000 per kg compared to the previous month.

Meanwhile, in the Central-Central Highlands and the southern regions, a kg of live hog costs around VND51,000 to VND54,000, up VND1,000 to VND2,000 over late December 2022.
