Vietnam ships first batch of low-emission rice to Japan
VOV.VN - The Vietnam Rice Industry Association (VIETRISA) hosted a ceremony in Can Tho City on June 5 to export the country’s first 500-tonne shipment of "Vietnam Green & Low-Emission Rice" to Japan.

The ceremony marks a significant step forward in the implementation of Vietnam’s ambitious plan to sustainably cultivate one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta by 2030.
The exported rice, grown in Kien Giang province, is part of a certified batch from one of seven enterprises licensed to use the "Vietnam Green & Low-emission Rice" brand, with a combined certified volume of 19,200 tonnes. The export price at the enterprise's warehouse stands at US$820 per tonne.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Tran Thanh Nam praised the year-long efforts of farmers, cooperatives, businesses, and agricultural officials in developing a new cultivation approach.
“This marks a turning point for Mekong Delta rice farmers. It’s more than just a new method, it’s a shift in mindset. Farmers are now beginning to understand the value of low-emission rice and its market potential,” he said.

He also extended appreciation to Japanese partners for importing the first certified batch of Vietnamese Japonica rice, noting that Japanese consumers would benefit not only from premium-quality rice but also from environmentally sustainable practices recognised by a green certification.
The Deputy Minister called the event a crucial milestone that signals Vietnam’s growing ability to compete in global markets by meeting international standards for sustainable agriculture.
“This isn’t just about exporting rice. It’s about leading the way in green growth,” he said.
Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan sent a congratulatory letter, noting “This is more than a commercial transaction, it marks the beginning of a new era, where rice production aligns with environmental stewardship and responsibility to future generations.”
He thanked the trailblazing farmers, cooperatives, businesses, and experts who embraced sustainable farming, and emphasized Vietnam’s evolving role as not only a top rice exporter but a champion of environmentally responsible agriculture.
