Vietnam retains its position as Singapore’s third-largest rice supplier

VOV.VN - Rice continues to be one of Vietnam’s key export products to Singapore, maintaining its position as the city-state’s third-largest supplier after India and Thailand.

According to data from Singapore’s Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), during the nine-month period of 2025, Singapore’s rice imports (HS code 1006) from Vietnam were valued at S$87.8 million (approximately US$67.5 million), down 11.5% year on year, accounting for 25.3% of the country’s total rice import market.

Although Singapore’s overall market size has remained largely stable, the import value of Vietnamese rice declined due to lower average export prices compared with last year.

White rice remained the top imported category, with a value of S$53.2 million, up 10.1% year on year and representing 31% of the market share. Vietnam ranked second in this segment, following India (S$75.2 million, or 43.8% share).

Vietnam also recorded notable import values in two other categories- milled or husked fragrant rice and glutinous rice, reaching US$24.6 million and US$6.7 million, respectively, equivalent to 59.7% and 63.2% of Singapore’s market share. Despite a year-on-year decline in value due to lower export prices, Vietnam remains the leading supplier for both segments.

According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore, the island city state's domestic market has largely reached saturation. Vietnamese rice will continue to face strong competition from India, Thailand, and Japan. Ongoing discussions between Singapore and Vietnam on a potential rice trade agreement are expected to help stabilize Vietnam’s rice exports to this market in the comming period.
