Vietnam outperforms Thailand to emerge as largest durian supplier for China
VOV.VN - With 32,750 tonnes of durian exported to China during the opening two months of the year, Vietnam outperformed Thailand as it emerged as the largest durian supplier for the northern neighbour, according to details given by Thai newswire The Nation.
This figure accounts for 57% of China's total imports, while Thailand shipped only 19,000 tonnes to the market, making up only 33%.
The Republic of Korea’s Yonhap news agency pointed out that Thailand, which is the world's leading durian exporter, has been facing tough competition from Vietnamese products in the Chinese market.
Meanwhile, China's imports of Thai durian throughout the reviewed period dropped by half to 19,000 tonnes compared to 2023, equivalent to about 33% of the country's total durian imports.
Previously, Thai durian products made up over 90% of the overall market share in the Chinese market. However, Vietnamese durian has recently experienced impressive export growth in the market due to convenient transportation, favourable climate conditions, and a cheap price.
The nation is currently only capable of exporting fresh durian to China, while Thailand can also export frozen and processed products.
Industry insiders anticipate that the Vietnamese durian export output will continue to increase if China allows the import of frozen durian from Vietnam in the near future.
