Vietnam begins formal export of durians to China

Vietnamese durians can be exported to China through all the border gates of the latter starting July 11.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) on July 11 signed a protocol on quarantine requirements for durians shipped to China from Vietnam.

They had conducted negotiations about the protocol for the past two years, reported Tuoi Tre Online.

Under the protocol,  which will be valid for three years, Vietnamese durians will be shipped through China’s all border gates that are allowed to import fruits by GACC.

As durians arrive at Chinese border gates, the Chinese customs side will check the relevant documents and complete the quarantine process.

The Chinese side requires that all durian growing areas and packaging facilities for export to China register with the Vietnamese agriculture ministry and GACC for approval. Those failing to register are disallowed to export durians to China.

The registration information comprises their names, addresses and granted codes, which will facilitate traceability if an export item fails to comply with the protocol’s requirements.

Before the first batch of durians is shipped to China, the agriculture ministry will have to send GACC a list of registered gardens and packaging facilities for approval. The list will be regularly updated and posted on the GACC website.

All of the growing areas registering to export durians to China must build a quality management and traceability system, apply Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and meet other hygiene requirements.
