Vietnam becomes second largest smartphone supplier to US

VOV.VN - Vietnam has risen to become the second largest exporter of smartphones to the United States, trailing only behind India, which topped the rankings for the first time, according to global technology vendor Canalys.

Vietnam, which is home to the majority of Samsung Electronics Co.’s manufacturing operations, secured second position in the volume of smartphones exported to the US in quarter II, 2025. This underscores the country’s growing importance in the global supply chain as major tech companies seek to diversify their manufacturing away from China.

Meanwhile, India first emerged as the largest manufacturer for smartphones shipped into the US in quarter II. Statistics from Canalys show, the total volume of “Made-in-India” smartphones witnessed annual growth of 240% and now accounts for 44% of smartphones imported into the US market, up from only 13% of smartphone shipments in Q2.

Canalys analysts attributed this notable shift to Apple’s increased production in India and smartphone makers stockpiling inventory amid concerns over tariffs. In Q2 2025, the number of iPhones produced in India more than tripled compared to the same period last year.

“India became the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones sold in the US for the very first time in Q2 2025, largely driven by Apple’s accelerated supply chain shift to India amid an uncertain trade landscape between the US and China,” said Sanyam Chaurasia, principal analyst at Canalys.

Apple has scaled up its production capacity in India over the last several years as a part of its ‘China Plus One’ strategy and has since opted to dedicate most of its export capacity in India to supply the US market so far this year.

China came in third as the share of its smartphone exports to the US shrank to 25% in the reviewed period, a drop from 61% the previous year.

“Vendors continue to frontload devices and maintain high inventory levels to best cope with the risk of tariffs coming into play later in the year,” shared Runar Bjorhovde, senior analyst at Canalys.

New research from Canalys reveals that US smartphone shipments grew by 1% in Q2 as vendors continued to frontload device inventories amid tariff concerns.

Apple and other manufacturers are shifting their manufacturing supply chain away from China in order to mitigate risks amid tariff-fueled uncertainty and geopolitical tensions.
