Vietnam, Australia boost cooperation in rice production and value chain

VOV.VN - Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam had a working session with Anthony McFarlane, Head of Corporate Affairs at Sunrice Group, Australia's largest rice producer and distributor in Canberra on October 29.

The meeting was also attended by Lao Ambassador to Australia Chatoulong Bouasisavath. During working session, McFarlane briefed Ambassador Pham Hung Tam on SunRice’s operations and cooperative projects in Vietnam. In recent years, SunRice has actively partnered with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) to research and develop multiple high-yield rice varieties in Vietnam. These products not only meet domestic demand but are also exported to international markets including Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.

SunRice has also emphasized raising farmers’ awareness of the rice value chain and reducing pesticide residues. Its latest project in collaboration with ACIAR, titled “Sustainable Rice Value Chain for Smallholder Farmers in the Mekong Delta,” aims to establish a high-yield, sustainable, traceable, and quality tropical rice value chain in the Mekong Delta, benefiting smallholder farmers and meeting SunRice’s market requirements. Sustainable rice production and value chain management are considered essential for small-scale farmers in Vietnam.

McFarlane also announced plans to celebrate the 75th anniversary of SunRice and 100 years of commercial rice cultivation in Australia next month.

Ambassador Pham Hung Tam hailed SunRice’s contributions and effective operations in Vietnam, congratulated the company on its milestone achievements, and expressed hope for more similar projects benefiting farmers. He also introduced McFarlane to the Lao Ambassador in Australia to explore opportunities for cooperation in Halal-certified agricultural and rice production, opening avenues for SunRice-Lao co-operation and further step up  agricultural cooperation between Australia and Laos.
