US leads Vietnam pepper imports, pays above-average prices
VOV.VN - Vietnam exported about 95,100 tonnes of pepper worth US$614.4 million during the past four months, with the US remaining the largest market in this period and among those paying the highest prices.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, pepper exports rose 29.2% in volume and 20.9% in value year-on-year, even as the average export price fell by 6.4%.
The US, Germany and Thailand were the three largest markets, accounting for 29.8%, 6.6% and 5.2% of exports, respectively.
In the first quarter, export value to the US increased by 54.2% compared with the same period last year, while export value to Thailand doubled and exports to Germany dropped by 11.8%. Among the top 15 markets, exports to Egypt recorded the strongest growth, tripling year-on-year.
The US not only remained Vietnam’s largest buyer but also paid higher-than-average prices. In the first quarter, it imported 17,693 tonnes at an average of US$7,251 per tonne, compared with the overall average of US$6,514 per tonne. For black pepper, export prices to the US averaged US$8,112 per tonne, ranking it among the higher-paying markets, behind the Republic of Korea.
Last year, the US imported more than 56,000 tonnes of Vietnamese pepper, worth over US$416 million.
