Tuna export turnover hits peak in May 2025
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s tuna export turnover reached a new peak in May 2025, hitting over US$90 million, the highest monthly figure since the beginning of the year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
The May figure marks a slight recovery of 8% compared to the same period last year, reported VASEP.
In the first five months of 2025, tuna exports brought in US$405 million, representing an increase of 4.9% year-on-year.
However, not all product categories experienced growth. Fresh, frozen, and dried tuna exports declined by 19%, while canned tuna exports were down 14% year-on-year. In contrast, frozen tuna meat/loins saw a strong rebound with a 16% increase, and other processed tuna products rose by 23%.
The United States, the European Union, and Thailand were Vietnam’s top three tuna export markets, accounting for 41%, 23%, and 4% of total export turnover, respectively.
In particular, tuna export turnover to the US rebounded in May, up 37% year-on-year after slowing down in April due to concerns relating to the US imposition of reciprocal tariffs.
Tuna export turnover to the EU reversed direction and decreased in May, down 11% year-on-year. In particular, tuna exports to the Netherlands and Italy, still maintained growth momentum, though the growth rate slowed down with respective rises of 11% and 15%.
In the Middle East, exports suffered a sharp downturn. Shipments to Israel dropped by 42%, Saudi Arabia by 89%, and the UAE by 52% compared to May 2024.
Meanwhile, tuna exports to member countries of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) showed a positive trend, growing by 25% in May.
