Tra fish exports to Brazilian market record double digit fall

VOV.VN - As of mid-February, Vietnamese Tra fish (pangasius) exports to the Brazilian market reached US$10.5 million, an annual decline of 51%, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

January witnessed the volume of pangasius exported to Brazil reach 1,194 tonnes, the lowest level since May, 2022.

The average price of Vietnamese pangasius exports to Brazil in January therefore stood at US$3.06 per kg, up 3% from US$2.98 per kg recorded in the same period last year.

The volume of tra fish exported to the Brazilian market duly dropped by 79% on-year.

In January, 2022, the volume of Vietnamese Tra fish exported to the Brazilian market also hit a monthly record, before gradually decreasing to its lowest level after two years in May with only 1.1 thousand tonnes.

Exports gradually recovered in the third quarter of 2022, although they began to decline markedly from November, 2022, similar to the trend of many other markets before the impact of inflation and economic slowdown.

In 2022, Vietnamese tra fish exports to Brazil reached more than US$95 million, up 35% on-year, mainly thanks to an increase in average export prices.

The peak came in July, 2022, with the average price of pangasius exports to Brazil reaching a record of US$3.55 per kg, up 51% over the same period from last year.

In the general decline trend to most markets, Brazil continues to retain its position as the fourth largest import market of Vietnamese Tra fish, accounting for nearly 7% of the market share.

In 2022, Brazil's total aquaculture imports fell by 1% in volume, but soared by 23% in value compared to 2021, thereby reaching 130,259 tonnes worth US$897.8 million. In addition, the import value fell mainly due to the increase in import prices of salmon and pangasius compared to the previous year.

Elsewhere, Tra fish imports into Brazil also remained at the same in volume, but grew by 45% in value, hitting 28,407 tonnes valued at US$90.9 million.
