Thailand moves forward with National e-Payment system implementation

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) will install additional devices this month to facilitate mobile payments via QR code, promoting the national e-payment system.

According to Finance Minister Apisak Tantivorawong, there are 31.5 million bank accounts linked to the national e-payment system.

Of these accounts, 23.3 million registered with their national ID number, and the rest used only their phone number.

The minister urged the latter group to provide their national ID for stronger security in state transactions, such as tax returns and welfare payments.

The minister said that the BoT will install more QR scanners and electronics data capture devices this month, in order to facilitate e-payment.

He estimated that the full-fledged e-payment system for governmental units will be operational within a year.

The minister also mentioned that the low-income ID card will be available by October 1st. Card holders are entitled to welfare benefits such as discounts on utilities and free bus rides.
