Thai enterprises seek investment opportunities in Can Tho

A Thai business delegation led by Ambassador Urawadee Sriphiromya paid a working visit to Can Tho on October 29 to explore opportunities for expanding investment cooperation in the Mekong Delta city.

Thai Ambassador to Vietnam Urawadee expressed confidence that, following the recent administrative unit merger, Can Tho will continue to thrive and prosper. She thanked the city’s leaders for their support to Thai businesses operating in the locality and noted that Can Tho’s development goals align closely with Thailand’s, particularly in relation to the “three-connectivity strategy”, linking supply chains, local economies and sustainable development strategies.

The diplomat described Can Tho as a dynamic and fast-growing hub for green economic development and services, playing a crucial role in ensuring Vietnam’s food security. She voiced her hope to enhance cooperation between Thai enterprises and Can Tho across sectors such as smart agriculture, green agricultural processing, smart logistics, eco-tourism, renewable energy, and waste treatment. She also announced plans to hold a large-scale “Thailand Trade Exhibition” in Can Tho in 2026.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, Vice Chairwoman of the municipal People’s Committee, highlighted that Can Tho is one of Vietnam’s six centrally-run cities and serves as the economic centre of the Mekong Delta — the country’s key region for rice, fruit and seafood production. With its strategic location, diverse transport connectivity and rapidly developing infrastructure, Can Tho aims to become one of Vietnam’s national growth poles by 2030, she said, stressing that international cooperation, including with Thailand, will play a key role in this goal.

She added that Can Tho holds great potential for investment in high-tech agriculture, agricultural and aquatic product processing for export, industry, tourism, trade and logistics services. The city welcomes cooperation with Thai partners in these fields and is committed to facilitating Thai investors’ access to information, project implementation, and collaboration with local authorities. Can Tho is also ready to work with the Thai Embassy to promote bilateral exchanges and organise investment and tourism promotion activities.

In the first nine months of 2025, Can Tho’s exports to Thailand reached US$22.7 million, mainly comprising seafood, garments, and processed agricultural products, while imports from Thailand totalled US$13.5 million, including fabrics, raw materials, machinery and production equipment. The city currently hosts five Thai-invested projects with a combined registered capital of approximately US$119 million.
