According to the TFDA, to ensure food safety, Taiwan will continue conducting batch-by-batch inspections on fresh durians under the product code "0810.60.00.00.7" from Vietnam until April 30, 2025, in line with its food import inspection regulations.
Previously, from August 12, 2024, to February 11, 2025, Taiwan had imposed the same inspection requirement after detecting four non-compliant shipments within six months.
This measure follows the impact of Typhoon Gaemi, which led to a surge in demand for fresh produce in Taiwan, prompting increased imports from Vietnam to stabilize local prices. In response, the TFDA has urged Vietnamese relevant agencies to work closely with exporters to ensure compliance with strict food safety and hygiene standards.
According to TFDA data, eight shipments of fresh Vietnamese durians failed to meet Taiwan's standards in 2024. The agency also noted that if further extensions are necessary, it will announce them on its official portal without issuing separate notifications.
The TFDA emphasized that if any imported durians are found to pose health or safety risks, businesses must immediately halt sales, recall the products, and inform local authorities.
Taiwan primarily imports durians from Thailand and Vietnam. In recent years, Vietnamese durians have gained popularity in the market due to their competitive pricing and improving quality, leading to steady growth in exports.
According to the Taiwan Fruit Importers Association, Vietnamese durians have secured a strong position in the market thanks to their affordability, abundant supply, and increasing consumer preference. With Taiwan unable to produce durians locally, this presents an opportunity for Vietnam to further expand its exports and maintain market share.
