SpaceX’s Starlink licensed to provide satellite internet services in Vietnam
VOV.VN - SpaceX’s Starlink has been licensed to provide satellite internet services in Vietnam, marking the company’s formal market entry through a locally incorporated subsidiary, according to official business registration records.
Starlink Services Vietnam Co., Ltd., headquartered in Hanoi’s Cua Nam ward, has registered charter capital of VND30 billion dong (approximately US$1.2 million), according to national business registration records. The company’s main business line is satellite telecommunications, including internet access services, leased lines for mobile base stations and mobile satellite services.
The company operates as a limited liability entity wholly owned by Starlink Holdings Netherlands B.V., based in Amsterdam.
Foreign companies commonly establish local subsidiaries in Vietnam with relatively modest charter capital during the initial phase, as charter capital represents a committed contribution rather than total available financial resources. Multinational corporations often use such entities to complete legal procedures, recruit staff and assess market conditions before expanding investment.
Starlink is a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet network developed by SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by billionaire Elon Musk. The system aims to expand broadband access to remote and hard-to-reach areas where fiber-optic infrastructure is unavailable or where network facilities have been disrupted by conflict or natural disasters.
The network currently operates around 6,750 satellites at an average altitude of about 550 kilometers and serves approximately 5 million users across more than 125 countries and territories.
In April 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc granted Starlink a pilot license, making it the first foreign company authorised to trial satellite internet services in Vietnam. After completing regulatory procedures, SpaceX was formally granted a telecommunications service license with network infrastructure by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The company also received a license for frequency use and radio equipment from the Radio Frequency Department.
During the initial phase, Starlink is permitted to deploy four gateway stations and up to 600,000 user terminals. The licensing approval allows the company to legally build transmission and reception infrastructure while ensuring no harmful interference with existing radio communication networks.
Once commercial operations are fully implemented, Vietnam will become the fifth country in Southeast Asia to host Starlink services, after the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Analysts say the move could support more sustainable development of Vietnam’s telecommunications market while expanding satellite-based internet connectivity nationwide.
