Six-month pepper exports soar by 30%

VOV.VN - Vietnam exported 142,586 tonnes of pepper of all kinds worth US$634.2 million during the first half of the year, marking a drop of 6.8% in volume but a rise of 30.5% in value on-year, according to statistics released by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA).

The reviewed period witnessed the country gross US$539.9 million and US$94.3 million from exporting 125,959 tonnes of black pepper and 16,627 tonnes of white pepper, respectively

The United States remained the nation’s largest consumer of pepper products with 37,435 tonnes, up 44.6% on-year, thereby accounting for 26.3% of the overall market share. This was followed by Germany with 9,526 tonnes, up 106.7%; and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with 8,388 tonnes, up 15.2%.

Meanwhile, exports to India, the Netherland, and China also surged by 45.7%, 52.1%, and 85.2%, respectively.

The leading consumers of Vietnamese white pepper were Germany with 2,454 tonnes, the US market with 2,044 tonnes, the Netherlands with 1,779 tonnes, Thailand with 1,732 tonnes, and China with 1,567 tonnes.

Meanwhile, the country imported 18,002 tonnes of pepper of all kinds worth US$69.6 million, up 18.9% on-year. The three main pepper suppliers to the Vietnamese market include Brazil, Cambodia, and Indonesia.

According to business representatives, Vietnamese pepper export turnover enjoyed a surge despite a reduction in export volume due to continuous increases in pepper prices in the reviewed period.

Currently, the average export price of Vietnamese pepper edged up by US$1,000 per tonne compared to the same period last year.

Insiders attributed this sharp increase in pepper prices to a remarkable decrease in global pepper production as a result of the El Nino phenomenon and the decline in growing areas.
