Seminar examines industrial policy for Vietnam in future

VOV.VN - A workshop looking at industrial policies and visions for Vietnam was held in Hanoi on December 20, attracting significant attention from experts, policymakers, and business representatives.

The workshop, held by the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), was part of the Macroeconomic Reform/Green Growth Programme, funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development through the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

In her opening remarks, CIEM Director Tran Thi Hong Minh emphasized the crucial role of industrial policy in guiding the development of key economic sectors, enhancing national competitiveness, and fostering sustainable economic growth. She highlighted the urgent need for Vietnam’s industrial policy to adapt to emerging trends, particularly digital transformation and green transition, to meet the demand of globalization and deep economic integration.

Taking the floor, Nguyen Anh Duong, head of the CIEM General Research Department, presented the institute’s study that analyzes the theoretical foundations and global trends in national industrial policy, assesses Vietnam’s responsiveness to these emerging trends, and outlines a vision and policy recommendations to promote sustainable and innovative industrial development.

The report particularly emphasizes the role of institutional reform and policymaking reform in promoting sustainable development. Reviewing and improving the legal framework, as well as enhancing the investment and business environment, will enable Vietnam to fully capitalize on the advantages of emerging development trends, free trade agreements, and effectively address global challenges such as climate change and resource depletion.

In addition, the report analyzes industrial policy orientations and requirements to resolve Vietnam’s longstanding issues, including low labour productivity, limited technological development capacity, and dependence on labour-intensive industries.

It recommends boosting the export of high-value-added products, attracting high-quality foreign investment, and creating favourable conditions for domestic enterprises to effectively integrate into regional and global supply chains.

Dr. Vo Tri Thanh, head of the Institute for Brand and Competitiveness Strategy, stressed the need for Vietnam to enhance support for enterprises and catch up with international development trends. He highlighted the importance of building a sustainable industrial ecosystem, emphasizing practical linkages between domestic and foreign enterprises as a crucial factor.

The workshop provided a platform for experts to share insights, evaluate the current state of Vietnam’s industrial policy, and discuss strategic solutions for the future.
