Samsung, OPPO & Xiaomi led smartphone market in Q2

Xiaomi takes over third place from Huawei in second quarter as top 2 remain unchanged.

Xiaomi took over third place from Huawei in Vietnam’s smartphone market in the second quarter of this year, behind the two major brands of Samsung and OPPO, according to the latest report from IDC Indochina.

The Chinese smartphone brand held third position with a 9 per cent market share, partly thanks to huge volumes of Redmi Note 7 being sold at low-segment prices.

Samsung led in terms of volume in the quarter, with a market share of 38 per cent, followed by OPPO with 25 per cent. The South Korean giant also led the global market in the same period, according to foreign market researchers Strategy Analytics and Counterpoint, though sales revenue globally fell 3 per cent against the second quarter of 2018.

There were 3.8 million smartphones sold in Vietnam in the second quarter, an increase of 6.8 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

Mr. Vo Le Tam Thanh, a local analyst at IDC Indochina, told VET that average prices excluding VAT stood at $206. There were 15 million smartphones sold in Vietnam in 2018, of which Samsung had a 34.5 per cent market share, OPPO 23.6 per cent, and Huawei 6.9 per cent.

He previously said that the market is gradually reaching a saturation point and a war has emerged in market share, with existing smartphone manufacturers not resting on any laurels and even investing more in products and brand identity.

VinSmart, a subsidiary of Vingroup, will push growth in the market, while the market will impact its brand - Vsmart - in terms of price setting, product design, brand identity, and national distribution networks.

With advantages in capital and research and development partnerships with local and foreign players, VinSmart plans to launch ten smartphones in 2019 in all segments, featuring the latest technology and trends.

According to recent research from Strategy Analytics, global smartphone shipments reached 341 million units in the second quarter. Samsung maintained first position, with 22 per cent of the global market. Huawei surprised with 17 per cent, while third-placed Apple held 11 per cent.
