Revised Power Development Plan gets go-ahead, priority given to renewable energy
VOV.VN - The Prime Minister has approved the revised Power Development Plan VIII for the 2021–2030 period with a vision to 2050, placing strong emphasis on renewable energy development alongside the restart of nuclear power projects.

The revised plan outlines three key objectives - ensuring national energy security, promoting a just energy transition, and building a comprehensive energy industry ecosystem centred on renewable and new energy sources.
It aims to increase the share of renewables in Vietnam’s power mix to 28–36% by 2030, and an ambitious 74–75% by 2050. Specifically, onshore and nearshore wind power capacity by 2030 will be between 26,066 MW and 38,029 MW, while offshore wind power capacity hovers between 6,000MW and 17,032 MW for the 2030 - 2035 period. In addition, the solar power capacity stands at between 46,459MW and 73,416 MW.
A major update is the reintroduction of nuclear power, in line with a previously approved direction by the National Assembly. The Ninh Thuan 1 & 2 nuclear plants are scheduled to be operational between 2030 and 2035, with a combined capacity of 4,000–6,400 MW.
With regard to the power transmission grid development plan, Pham Nguyen Hung, deputy director of the Electric and Renewable Energy Authority, emphasises that the development of the power transmission system will be synchronised with power sources and the load development needs of localities.
He underlines the need to make use of advanced technology, ensure international standards, and be ready for regional connection, all while simultaneously developing a smart grid to integrate large-scale renewable energy sources in a bid to meet the requirements for safe, stable, and economical power system operation.
With specific targets aimed at ensuring national energy security, electricity production and imports in 2030 must reach between 560.4 billion and 624.6 billion kWh and between 1,360.1 and 1,511.1 billion kWh by 2050, he adds.
Nguyen Anh Tuan, general director of Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN), has requested that the Ministry of Industry and Trade devise a concrete scheme to implement the recently approved plan as soon as possible.
