PM witnesses the opening of new Can Tho air routes

VOV.VN - On the morning of April 6, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was in attendance at a ceremony held at Can Tho International Airport to mark the start of low-cost carrier Vietjet’s five new air routes from the city’s airport.

The five new air routes launched by Vietjet include Can Tho-Hai Phong, Can Tho-Vinh, Can Tho-Nha Trang, Can Tho-Thanh Hoa, and Can Tho-Da Lat.

During the ceremony, Vietjet Chairwoman Nguyen Thanh Ha said the opening of new air routes will ease travelling for both residents and tourists as well as boosting trade and investment into Can Tho and other neighbouring localities.

Previously, Vietjet and the Can Tho People’s Committee signed a memorandum of understanding to establish co-operative ties aimed at promoting trade, aviation, tourism, and investment.

Speaking at the event, PM Phuc underscored the importance of the five new air routes to the development of the south-western region, noting that  Vietjet has undergone rapid developments since its establishment in 2011 with a modern fleet of more than 70 aircraft.

The cabinet leader expressed his wish that Viejtet and other firms will continue to stand side by side with the government towards spurring the country’s development, including the south-western region.

Notably, Vietnam has been recording rapid growth in comparison to the rest of the world. Indeed, the nation’s GDP has been growing by between 6 and 7 per cent annually over a long period of time, leading to an increasing demand for air travel. Currently, more than 100 million people travel by air each year.

Therefore, there is a great need to further develop the country’s transport infrastructure, including in aviation as the number of tourists who travel to Vietnam by air accounts for 80 per cent annually.

The PM has requested that Vietjet and other airlines continue to tap into smaller international air routes such Can Tho, particularly in the context of overloading at Tan Son Nhat airport and Long Thanh airport undergoing construction.

Vietjet and the Airport Corporations of Vietnam (ACV) are asked to closely co-operate in order to develop, select good pilots, ensure aviation safety and to maintain high levels of service for passengers.

The Ministry of Transport and ACV have also been urged to improve their quality of service at airports along with ensuring in-flight security and safety.
