PM kicks off construction of Long Thanh and Tan Son Nhat airport terminals

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on August 31 issued an order starting construction work on a passenger terminal at the Long Thanh International Airport in southern Dong Nai province and the third terminal (T3) of the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Upon addressing the groundbreaking ceremony for the important bidding packages, PM Chinh underscored the importance of infrastructure development, especially in transportation infrastructure to boost the country’s socio-economic development.

He emphasised that the Long Thanh International Airport Project - Phase 1 and the project on construction of the third terminal of Tan Son Nhat International Airport are two large projects which play a crucial role in the national airport network.

They have also been part of important national transport projects related to security, defence, and socio-economic development of the southern key economic region, as well as the entire country, PM Chinh added.

Once completed, these projects will contribute to turning the nation into a major transportation hub within the region and the world, thereby giving fresh impetus to accelerating the economic development and improving national competitiveness.

With an estimated investment capital of VND35 trillion, the Long Thanh International Airport project is part of a group consisting of the 16 most anticipated airports in the world.

In the first phase, a runway and one passenger terminal along with other supporting facilities will be built with a capacity of 25 million passengers annually and 1.2 million tonnes of goods each year.

After completing all phases, Long Thanh International Airport is expected to reach a capacity of up to 100 million passengers per year. This is not only the largest airport in Vietnam but the site also aims to become one of the international air transit centres throughout the region.

The airport is anticipated to contribute to turning the country into an attractive destination on the international aviation map.

The third terminal of Tan Son Nhat airport is estimated to cost nearly VND11 trillion. It is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2025, handling domestic flights and up to 20 million passengers annually.

The project will help to reduce overcrowding, improve passenger service quality as well as the country's overall competitiveness.
