PM issues order to export first shipment through Cat Lai port

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued an order in the early days of the Lunar New Year to export the first shipment from Tan Cang Cat Lai port in Ho Chi Minh City, belonging to Saigon Newport Corporation.

The first cargo taking place at the port in the early days of the Lunar New Year, known locally as Tet, is an electronic product that has contributed to increasing the southern city's export turnover last year to more than US$47 billion.

The port is run by the Saigon New Port Corporation under the Vietnam People's Navy. According to details set out in a report by Saigon New Port Corporation , the port received nine container ships with a total cargo handling capacity of 15,424 TEU, equivalent to 220,000 tonnes of goods on January 29.

In the first week of Tet, the port welcomed a total of 70 vessels with the cargo throughput reaching 107,000 TEU, equivalent to more than 1.54 million tonnes of goods, duly marking a rise of up 2.5% compared to the same period from last year.

Upon addressing the event, PM Chinh emphasized that this year is anticipated to see a range of complicated and unpredictable developments both internationally and domestically, with plenty of challenges ahead.

PM Chinh therefore expressed his hope that Saigon Newport Corporation will make great strides in order to compete with major seaports both in the region and throughout in the world, adding that the unit will serve as a pioneering unit in implementing the strategy for sustainable development of the country’s marine economy to 2030, with a vision towards 2045.

The cabinet chief also requested that local businesses join hands in a bid to develop the transport and logistics industry on a par with the advanced level of the region and the world in order to meet import and export demand. This should be done to reduce logistics costs and contribute to improving the overall competitiveness of Vietnamese goods.
