New US East Coast shipping service makes first call at Vietnam's SSIT
VOV.VN - SP-SSA International Terminal (SSIT), a strategic deep-sea port, has officially welcomed ZIM's new ZXB service, marking a further step in the port's efforts to expand its international maritime connections in the Cai Mep-Thi Vai area in Ho Chi Minh City.
The Singapore-flagged ZIM MOUNT RAINIER became the first vessel on the upgraded ZXB service to call at SSIT.
Measuring 366 metres in length and with a capacity of 15,124 TEUs, the vessel is among the largest container ships operating on major international trade routes.
The ship is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), one of the shipping industry's leading green energy solutions, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts.
The new service provides direct connections linking Vietnam with major logistics and economic centres across Asia and the US East Coast.
SSIT's inclusion in the service shows the port's handling capacity and strategic position within international shipping networks.
Phan Hoang Vu, General Director of SSIT, said the launch of the ZXB service, with regular vessel calls at the port, marked a new milestone in cooperation between SSIT and ZIM.
The development comes as the maritime industry continues to evolve, particularly on trade routes linking Vietnam and the United States, he said.
"The successful handling of the LNG-powered ZIM MOUNT RAINIER demonstrates our shared commitment to promoting green and sustainable maritime development in Vietnam," Vu added.
Established in 2006, SSIT is a joint venture between SSA Marine of the United States, Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC) and Saigon Port. The terminal is located within the Cai Mep-Thi Vai deep-water port complex in Ho Chi Minh City.
