Gemadept breaks ground on VND8.4 trillion Phase 2 of Gemalink deep-sea port

VOV.VN - Gemadept Corporation, in partnership with leading French container shipping and logistics group CMA CGM, on April 17 broke ground on Phase 2 of the Gemalink deep-sea port at the Cai Mep–Thi Vai complex, a project with total investment of nearly VND8.4 trillion.

Strategically located at the heart of the Cai Mep–Thi Vai deep-water port cluster, Gemalink serves as a vital international gateway connecting southern Vietnam to major global shipping routes. The port is positioned within the planned Ho Chi Minh City Free Trade Zone at Cai Mep Ha and benefits from an increasingly integrated transport network, including expressways, inland waterways, and direct links to key industrial hubs such as Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

Since commencing operations in 2021, Gemalink has demonstrated strong growth momentum. Over the 2021–2025 period, the port handled more than 2,000 vessel calls, nearly 70% of which were ultra-large vessels ranging from 160,000 to over 230,000 DWT, and processed approximately 6.5 million TEU, maintaining double-digit annual growth. This performance provides a solid foundation for its next phase of expansion.

The development of Phase 2 forms a central component of Gemadept’s 2026–2030 strategy, which focuses on three key pillars: port operations, integrated logistics, and inland and maritime transport. Upon completion, the project will increase Gemalink’s total capacity to over 3 million TEU per year, significantly enhancing the Cai Mep–Thi Vai cluster’s ability to accommodate next-generation mega vessels and meet rising global trade demand.

Phase 2 includes the construction of major new infrastructure, such as a 285-meter main berth capable of receiving vessels up to 250,000 DWT, a 359-meter upstream berth for vessels up to 150,000 DWT, and a 390-meter barge berth. The project spans nearly 109 hectares, including both land and water surface.

A representative of Gemalink noted that the project would continue to pioneer a “Smart & Green Port” model, featuring fully electrified crane systems and the application of advanced technologies. This approach is expected to support shipping lines in meeting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, while reinforcing Cai Mep–Thi Vai’s position among the world’s leading container port clusters in terms of efficiency and service quality.

Scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2027, Phase 2 is expected to play a pivotal role in the development of the Ho Chi Minh City Free Trade Zone. By strengthening connectivity between production, logistics, and services, the project will contribute to the city’s long-term growth ambitions and its vision of becoming an international maritime and financial hub.
