Mukdahan in northeastern Thailand is taking a move to develop a workforce in preparation for the development of the province as a special economic zone.
Emphasis will be placed on developing professional skills in three industries, namely production, tourism, and logistics. The province is also in need of more personnel teaching ASEAN languages, and the number of students in vocational education needs to be increased, as well.
Ubon Ratchathani University, Mukdahan Campus, has opened various fields of study. The most popular fields are accountancy, information technology, logistics, and management innovation. The campus has also cooperated with the University of Da Nang in Vietnam.
The Mukdahan Special Economic Zone covers three districts: Mueang, Wan Yai, and Don Tan, with an area of 578.5 square kilometers. These districts border the Mekong River. The Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connecting Mukdahan with Savannakhet in Lao PDR serves as a link between Thailand and neighboring countries.
Several infrastructure projects have been launched to prepare for this special economic zone. For instance, more roads have been constructed leading to the Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. The "One Chamber of Commerce, One Agricultural Cooperative” project has also been carried out for management in the new special economic zone.
The province has good potential for tourism, trade, investment, and agriculture. It has become a gateway to other countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion. Mukdahan and three cities in neighboring countries have been developed as twin cities. The three cities include Savannakhet in Laos, Quang Tri in Vietnam, and Chongzuo in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China.
