Meet Indonesia 2026 drives Vietnam-Indonesia investment and production cooperation

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Indonesia are seeking to move beyond trade growth towards deeper investment, production and technology partnerships, as Meet Indonesia 2026 opened in Quang Ninh city on October 30.

More than 200 representatives from government agencies, localities and business communities of the two countries attended the opening of the conference, which aims to translate Vietnam – Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into practical economic cooperation.

Quang Ninh opens new avenues for bilateral cooperation

Addressing the event, Le Van Anh, Vice Chairman of the Quang Ninh People’s Committee, emphasised the conference comes at a significant time for the locality, which became a centrally governed city on September 1, 2026. The new status offers fresh development opportunities while placing greater demands on governance and competitiveness.

Located at a key trading gateway in northeastern Vietnam and supported by increasingly integrated transport infrastructure, Quang Ninh is ready to expand cooperation with Indonesian businesses, he said.

The city prioritises investment and partnerships in four main areas - high-tech manufacturing and clean energy; the digital economy and smart technologies; the marine economy, port services and logistics; and tourism, including Muslim-friendly tourism, alongside cultural, educational and people-to-people exchanges.

Quang Ninh will continue improving its business environment, streamlining administrative procedures and supporting investors in resolving operational difficulties, aiming to turn the potential identified at the conference into concrete projects and sustained business connections, Anh affirmed.

Taking the floor, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Thi Hoang Van said the meeting follows the signing of the 2026–2030 Action Plan to implement the Vietnam–Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, providing a new framework for cooperation in strategic and emerging sectors.

She called for stronger links in infrastructure, trade and investment, including expanded direct air connectivity, and urged both sides to shift towards joint investment and production to raise added value, sustainability and competitiveness.

Cooperation in science and technology, semiconductors, innovation, artificial intelligence, green transformation and energy transition should also be expanded. She highlighted education, university partnerships and people-to-people exchanges as important foundations for long-term ties.

From trade growth to higher-value partnerships

Representing Indonesia, Kurniawan Ariadi, a senior adviser to the Minister of National Development Planning, shared that the country has maintained economic growth of around 5% despite global uncertainty. Indonesia’s economy grew by 5.45% in the first half of 2026, with consumption rising 5.38% and investment increasing 6.43%.

Indonesia is promoting investment in strategic industries, including mineral processing, automotive components, electronics, chemicals and agro-processing, as well as renewable energy, energy storage, digital technology, logistics and sustainable tourism.

The country is looking for partnerships that go beyond capital investment to bring technology, strengthen domestic industrial capacity, create quality jobs and develop mutually beneficial value chains.

Vietnam is Indonesia’s third largest export market within ASEAN, Kurniawan said, adding that the next stage of bilateral cooperation should focus more on manufacturing, technology partnerships and higher-value industrial cooperation rather than trade expansion alone.

Zelda Wulan Kartika, an adviser to Indonesia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs on economic diplomacy, highlighted opportunities for cooperation with Quang Ninh in metals, renewable energy, agricultural processing, food production, fisheries, maritime industries, logistics, port services and the digital economy.

She noted that the city’s strategic location, industrial base and port infrastructure could complement Indonesia’s economic strengths, creating opportunities for joint ventures, technology exchange and more resilient supply chains.

Bilateral trade and investment gather momentum

Vietnam and Indonesia have continued to expand their economic ties. Bilateral trade reached US$17.2 billion in 2025 and exceeded US$14.5 billion in the first nine months of 2026, according to figures cited at the conference.

Registered Indonesian investment in Vietnam surpassed US$1.74 billion in the first seven months of 2026, placing Indonesia sixth among foreign investors in the country. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s investment in Indonesia hit US$340.2 million in the first nine months of the year, accounting for 12.3% of Vietnam’s total outward investment.

The conference continued with thematic discussions on trade, investment and infrastructure in the digital and green era, as well as sustainable tourism cooperation and the development of a Halal ecosystem.

The discussions are expected to help identify practical opportunities for cooperation and strengthen business links as Vietnam and Indonesia are to turn their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into tangible economic outcomes.
