Mechanical engineering industry urged to pick up steam
(VOV) -The mechanical engineering industry needs to speed up modernization to meet the country’s development requirements during the national industrialization and modernization process, said PM Nguyen Tan Dung.
The Government leader made the statement at a conference in Hanoi on April 11 to review the 10-year implementation of Vietnam’s development strategy for the mechanical engineering industry.
Dung acknowledged the industry’s practical contributions to the national economy over the past decade and asked it to focus on some areas of its strength, such as agriculture, transport, seafood processing, and medical equipment.
It is essential to give priority to developing the manufacturing sector and draw up zoning plans in accordance with the market economy and integration process, he said.
However, Dung also pointed out several shortcoming of the mechanical engineering industry, saying it should sharpen competitiveness and increase administration capacity.
He stressed the need to create a closer link between businesses and State management agencies for greater achievements in the new era.
Over the past 10 years, the mechanical engineering industry has enjoyed strong growth, with its production value hitting more than VND251,000 billion (over US$12 billion) last year, or seven times higher than 2000’s figure.
