May exports up 14%, trade surplus estimated at US$4.67 billion

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s total export-import turnover posted a strong increase in May, with exports up 14% year-on-year and a trade surplus estimated at US$4.67 billion, a result considered encouraging amid continued global trade headwinds.

The figures were released at a monthly cabinet meeting held in Hanoi on June 4, which reviewed the country’s socio-economic performance for May and the first five months of 2025.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the export rebound last month shows positive momentum, despite ongoing uncertainties in global markets.

To support trade activities, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has focused on timely market updates, providing industry associations with relevant information to help businesses adjust production plans and identify new orders in response to shifting demand and ever-changing regulations.

Efforts have also been made to streamline administrative procedures and promote the use of online public services. The Ministry is working to revise legal documents to simplify procedures, while developing flexible policy scenarios to better respond to external challenges.

In parallel, Vietnam has continued to diversify export markets, both maintaining traditional partners and expanding into new ones. The Ministry is assisting businesses in fully capitalizing on free trade agreements (FTAs), including through training programs, especially on rules of origin to ensure compliance and maximize benefits.

Revisions to regulations on certificates of origin (C/O) are also being expedited to facilitate smoother customs clearance in line with international commitments.

As for agricultural exports, a key pillar of the Vietnamese economy, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 31 issued Directive No. 79, urging ministries and localities to take timely, flexible measures to support production, processing, and market access.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has been tasked with intensifying trade activities, organizing fairs and business-matching events both domestically and internationally, and support stronger brand recognition in foreign markets. It is also working with distribution networks to prioritize the sale of seasonal produce such as durian, lychee, longan, and dragon fruit. The Ministry will prioritize these efforts in its trade promotion strategy going forward.
