Lychee exports soar to US$80 million, tripling year-on-year
VOV.VN -Vietnam’s lychee exports reachedto an all-time high of US$80 million during the seven-month period, more than tripling the value recorded in the same period last year.
Data from the Vietnam Customs under the Ministry of Finance showed that exports in July alone hit nearly US$35 million, a 20-fold increase compared with July 2024. China remained the leading buyer, accounting for 71% of total turnover with US$57 million, almost four times higher year-on-year.
Papua New Guinea emerged as the second-largest market, importing lychees worth US$6 million, a remarkable 21-fold increase. Meanwhile, shipments to high-value destinations such as the United States, the European Union, Australia, and the United Kingdom also posted robust growth, with gains ranging from 38% to over 280%.
Industry experts attributed this export boom to factors including abundant supply, competitive pricing, and rising international demand. The expansion of lychee cultivation areas certified under VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards has also enabled exporters to meet stringent requirements in markets such as the US, EU, and Japan.
According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, advances in preservation technology are enhancing fruit quality and extending shelf life. At the same time, many businesses have strengthened their supply chains, from production through distribution, to improve efficiency and ensure stable quality.
A major highlight this year is the debut of fresh Vietnamese lychees at Costco, North America’s largest retail chain with more than 635 stores across the US and Canada. Previously, Vietnamese lychees were available only in limited quantities through select outlets such as Safeway.
Entry into Costco marks a breakthrough, opening the door for Vietnamese lychees to gain a stronger foothold in the global retail market. The Vietnam Trade Office in San Francisco will continue to support exporters in diversifying their products and expanding their presence in the US in the months ahead.
