Intel relocates assembly and test operations from Costa Rica to HCM City
VOV.VN - Intel has been relocating part of its assembly, packaging and testing operations from Costa Rica to the Saigon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP) in Ho Chi Minh City to produce chips for data centre servers.
The Saigon Hi-Tech Park Management Board said in a report to the city’s People’s Committee that Intel Products Vietnam remains a key part of Intel’s global semiconductor supply chain.
As part of its production restructuring strategy, Intel is shifting part of these operations from Costa Rica to Vietnam to produce chips for servers used in data centres and next-generation networking systems.
The company is increasing investment and transferring advanced packaging and testing technologies to enhance production capacity in Vietnam. This includes processors such as Panther Lake and Wildcat Lake, built on Intel’s most advanced 18A process, integrating artificial intelligence capabilities and enhanced graphics to improve performance and energy efficiency.
After 20 years in Vietnam, Intel’s facility at the Saigon Hi-Tech Park is the largest assembly and test site in its global manufacturing network, with cumulative output from 2010 to 2021 exceeding 3 billion units.
The plant, built on a 46.6-hectare site, has total committed investment of US$4.115 billion, accounting for nearly 30% of total registered capital at the park.
Intel Products Vietnam is a major contributor to Ho Chi Minh City’s exports, with export value reaching US$10.31 billion in 2023, US$11.41 billion in 2024 and US$11.67 billion in 2025. Exports are forecast to reach US$14.6 billion in 2026, up 25% from 2025.
The facility has created more than 2,700 high-skilled jobs, with average income around three times higher than the average level in the city’s FDI sector.
Intel has also supported workforce training in Vietnam by funding a packaging and testing line with 13 specialised pieces of equipment for the SHTP Training Centre.
The centre is finalizing a cleanroom and is set to officially launch its training facility on May 31, 2026.
