Indonesia buys more rice from Vietnam
Indonesia has announced a record rice tender for September, seeking to acquire up to 450,000 tonnes from international suppliers.
The rice must be white with 5% broken and produced during the 2024 crop year. Eligible suppliers include Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Pakistan, with deliveries expected in October and November.
In the tender held in July 2024 for 320,000 tonnes of 5% broken rice, Vietnamese suppliers secured seven out of 12 bidding packages, with a total volume of 185,000 tonnes.
During the first half of 2024, Indonesia became Vietnam’s second-largest rice importer, with nearly 709,000 tonnes imported, a 44% year-on-year increase.
According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, as of August 2024, Vietnam had exported over six million tonnes of rice, valued at nearly US$3.85 billion, a 5.8% increase in volume and a 21.7% rise in value against last year.
