HCM City submits proposal for VND93 trillion Can Gio-Vung Tau sea-crossing project

VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City has submitted an investment proposal for a sea-crossing project connecting Can Gio and Vung Tau under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework with a build-transfer (BT) contract, with total estimated investment exceeding VND 93 trillion.

According to the proposal, the project will span about 14 km and include a bridge, an undersea tunnel and connecting roads. It is regarded as a strategic transport infrastructure project that would establish a direct link between Can Gio and Vung Tau while strengthening regional connectivity between Ho Chi Minh City and the southeastern region.

Once completed, the route is projected to cut travel time between Ho Chi Minh City and Vung Tau to around 15-20 minutes, improving transport connectivity and reducing reliance on existing routes.

The project is also expected to support the development of the Can Gio coastal tourism area, Long Son Industrial Park and the Cai Mep-Thi Vai port cluster, while easing traffic pressure on National Highway 51 and other existing transport links.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the project is in line with the city’s development strategy for transport infrastructure, the marine economy and logistics in the next phase, and is considered a key component in completing the regional transport network.

Several major infrastructure projects are currently under way in Can Gio and surrounding areas, including the Can Gio-Ben Thanh railway, Can Gio Bridge and the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway. The Can Gio-Vung Tau sea link will help complete the regional transport network and improve the efficiency of these projects.

Under the preliminary financing plan, the project is expected to be funded through a combination of land fund allocations and the Ho Chi Minh City budget. Specific land allocations for BT payments will be determined during the feasibility study stage in accordance with regulations. Construction is scheduled for 2026-2029.
