HCM City breaks ground on Can Gio bridge to mark 14th National Party Congress
VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City on January 15 officially broke ground on the Can Gio Bridge project, one of four key infrastructure projects launched simultaneously in celebration of the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).
With a total length of about 6.3 km and six lanes, the Can Gio Bridge has a total investment of more than VND13.2 trillion. The main bridge, spanning nearly 3 km across the Soai Rap River, will connect Nha Be District with the former Can Gio District. Construction is scheduled for the 2026-2029 period.
The project is considered strategically important, replacing the Binh Khanh ferry and ending the area’s reliance on a single waterway transport route. It is expected to open up new development space toward the southeastern coast, complete the city’s southern transport network, and support investment, eco-tourism and the marine economy, while ensuring a balance between socio-economic development and environmental protection, including the preservation of the Can Gio mangrove biosphere reserve.
Speaking at the ceremony, Nguyen Cong Vinh, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, said the groundbreaking demonstrates the city’s determination to mobilise social resources to develop an integrated and modern transport infrastructure system, laying a foundation for sustainable socio-economic growth.
According to the city’s approved master plan for the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050, and the adjusted master plan toward 2040 with a vision to 2060, Can Gio is identified as one of the major growth poles in the southern part of the city.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to significantly shorten travel time, facilitate trade, tourism and services, and improve residents’ access to healthcare, education and cultural services.
The project will be implemented under a PPP model using a BT contract, with Masterise Group as the investor.
The municipal authorities pledged close coordination with relevant agencies and the investor to ensure the project is delivered on schedule, in compliance with regulations and technical standards, and with safety requirements.
Masterise Group committed to mobilising resources and experience to ensure progress, quality and safety, while prioritising environmental protection and the Can Gio mangrove ecosystem throughout all phases of the project.
