HCM City signs MoU on US$2.1 billion AI data centre project
VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee met with a joint venture of investors and international partners on March 11 to discuss plans for an artificial intelligence (AI) data centre project at Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park.
At the meeting, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology, together with Accelerated Infrastructure Capital (AIC) and international partners, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and submitted documents seeking an investment registration certificate for the large-scale AI data centre project. This marks a new step in the city’s strategy to develop digital infrastructure and the digital economy.
Lam Dinh Thang, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology, said science, technology and innovation are becoming important drivers of economic growth. In this trend, data infrastructure and computing capacity form the foundation for the digital economy and digital transformation.
According to Thang, the AI data centre project at Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park is expected to require investment of about US$2.1 billion. The project will be carried out by a joint venture between Accelerated Infrastructure Capital (AIC) and Kinh Bac City Development Holding Corporation (KBC), together with international partners.
Planned components include a data centre, technical infrastructure systems, power supply, water supply and drainage facilities, and high-performance computing equipment.
In the first phase, the project will develop an “AI Factory” with capacity of about 50MW, equivalent to roughly 28,000 graphics processing units (GPUs). The centre is designed to provide computing capacity for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications for domestic and international clients, while contributing to the development of Vietnam’s sovereign AI capacity. The full investment is expected to be disbursed and completed by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
Oliver Jones, co-founder of AIC, said the company highly values the support of the Vietnamese Government and the Ho Chi Minh City administration during preparation of the project.
As artificial intelligence expands rapidly worldwide, building high-performance computing infrastructure is essential for developing new technologies. AIC aims to bring advanced technologies from leading global partners to Vietnam, including GPU systems from NVIDIA, to build a large-scale AI factory.
The AIC also plans to connect international experts, technology partners and global clients to participate in the AI ecosystem in Ho Chi Minh City.
The company said it has prepared significant financial resources for the project and hopes to continue receiving policy and regulatory support during implementation.
In his speech, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Nguyen Van Duoc said the parties moved quickly from discussions to signing cooperation agreements to implement the project.
The city values the importance of the project for the development of digital infrastructure and the high-tech economy.
Ho Chi Minh City will implement the commitments made and work with ministries, relevant agencies and investors to resolve issues that arise during implementation. The city expects the project to begin operations soon, thus helping promote international cooperation and adding fresh impetus to the city’s economic and technological development in the coming period.
