Guangxi, Vietnamese localities expand cooperation in artificial intelligence
VOV.VN - Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China is looking to expand cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) with Vietnamese localities, building on close geographic links, cultural similarities and growing economic and technological exchanges.
In a recent media interview in China, Wei Tao, Chairman of the People’s Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said Guangxi borders Vietnam and maintains close relations with the country. Cultural similarities, expanding economic exchanges and growing cooperation in science and technology provide favourable conditions and a solid foundation for cooperation in AI.
According to Wei Tao, AI has become a prominent topic over the past two years and is now a key area in Guangxi’s development. Since 2025, the region has moved to keep pace with technological advances and make use of opportunities created by China’s national plan to build comprehensive AI capabilities.
Guangxi has mapped out its AI development roadmap, received approval to establish the China–ASEAN AI Application Cooperation Centre, and signed 44 AI cooperation agreements with ASEAN member states, including Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar.
The region has also proposed a development model described as “research and development in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou + integration in Guangxi + application in ASEAN.” The approach has been recognised by the Chinese government, welcomed by ASEAN member states and accepted by the market.
Assessing cooperation with Vietnamese localities in the AI sector, Wei Tao said the partnership has produced notable results since 2025. Cooperation among enterprises has expanded steadily, several application scenarios have been introduced in Vietnam, research links between universities have grown closer, and exchanges in human resource training have become more frequent.
In 2025, Guangxi organised five AI training courses for Vietnamese participants, with more than 200 trainees taking part.
Wei Tao also said that during his visit to Vietnam in November 2025, he introduced China’s “Comprehensive AI Capacity-Building Plan” and presented details about the China-ASEAN AI Application Cooperation Centre being developed in Guangxi.
During the visit, he witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the China-Vietnam AI Application Cooperation Centre, under which a Hanoi exhibition centre will be launched as part of the cooperation framework. Enterprises from both sides also signed 14 cooperation agreements in the digital economy and AI sectors.
These outcomes show the strong potential for cooperation between the two sides and provide a basis for expanding practical cooperation in AI.
Looking ahead, Wei Tao affirmed Guangxi’s readiness to work with Vietnam to bolster cooperation in AI in four areas.
First, the two sides will improve mechanisms and platforms to support dialogue, exchanges and coordination in AI. Second, they will work together to develop large-scale AI models based on the Vietnamese language and carry out research and development for sector-specific models.
Third, enterprises and research institutes from both sides will be encouraged to form joint research teams to conduct pilot projects and introduce application scenarios that support industrial upgrading.
Fourth, the two sides will expand cooperation in talent training and establish long-term, systematic training mechanisms.
