HCM City festival promotes organic food market potential in Vietnam

VOV.VN - The "Organic Food Festival 2025" kicked off in Ho Chi Minh City on May 16, showcasing a wide range of organic food brands and aiming to strengthen the development of a diverse and thriving organic market in southern Vietnam.

The event serves as both a platform to introduce organic products to consumers and a catalyst to boost market demand. It also encourages collaboration among producers, distributors, and retailers to support the sustainable growth of the organic food sector.

In his opening remarks, Ha Phuc Mich, chairman of the Vietnam Organic Agriculture Association, highlighted the increasing diversity of Vietnam’s organic food market which has been growing at an annual rate of 10% to 15%. Such high growth positions Vietnam among the world's leading countries for organic food development.

Mich attributed much of the sector’s expansion to Decree No. 109, issued in 2018, which laid the foundation for the country’s organic agriculture strategy. Prior to the decree, only 10 localities in Vietnam had implemented organic farming models. Today, organic production is expanding nationwide, offering consumers more clean and chemical-free food choices.

Nguyen Dinh Quyen, founder of Theorganikcoffee, whose organic coffee brand has gained strong consumer interest since its launch three years ago, attributed its popularity to its rich natural flavor, free from chemicals and preservatives, and its organic certification by the US Department of Agriculture.

However, Quyen acknowledged that high production costs continue to drive up retail prices, making the product less accessible to the wider market. To address this, the firm is expanding its raw material sourcing areas to boost production and lower costs.

"We believe increasing output is the key to reducing prices and stimulating demand for organic coffee," he explained, adding the firm also uses festivals like this one to connect with partners and explore collaborative solutions to reduce costs.

Meanwhile, Albin Deforges, a representative of Naturland in Vietnam, highlighted the growth potential of the Vietnamese organic market, particularly for products like tropical fruits, coconuts, coffee, cashews, rice, and seafood.

Naturland is actively assisting numerous Vietnamese partners in adopting international organic production standards, aiming to boost the output of Vietnamese organic products for both domestic consumption and export activities.

“We’re directly supporting producers to improve their practices and meet global standards, which is essential for fostering sustainable organic agriculture in Vietnam,” said Deforges.

He also noted that Naturland assists with product certification, helping businesses access demanding foreign markets.

Industry insiders emphasised the need to raise awareness and farming skills for farmers, cooperatives, and businesses in order to help expand organic growing areas across the country.

They also highlighted the need to build comprehensive organic food value chains, in which businesses play a central role in ensuring that farmers’ products find reliable markets.
