Hanoi workshop promotes Vietnam- China business connectivity

VOV.VN - A workshop was held in Hanoi on January 10 to promote connections between Vietnamese businesses and their counterparts from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao of China.

Addressing the event, Tran Duy Dong, deputy minister of Planning and Investment of Vietnam, noted the workshop gave the two sides the chance to share new investment and trade trends, introduce solutions to improve Vietnam’s investment environment, and make proposals to enhance cooperation efficiency towards success and sustainable development between Vietnamese businesses and their Chinese counterparts.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment is committed to working on solutions to reform the business investment environment and support businesses, while at the same time creating favourable conditions for foreign investors, including those from China, to effectively invest and operate in Vietnam, said Dong.

According to Dong, Vietnam is Hong Kong’s eighth largest trading partner, with the two-way trade turnover reaching US$13.5 billion in 2021, and US$11.8 billion in the initial 11 months of 2022. Hong Kong is currently ranked fifth in terms of foreign investment capital in Vietnam with 2,164 projects valued at nearly US$29.5 billion, focusing on fields such as processing, manufacturing, real estate, production and distribution of electricity, gas, water, and air-conditioning.

Dr. Jonathan Choi, head of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, Hong Kong - Vietnam Chamber of Commerce (HKVCC) and Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Entrepreneurs Union (GBA Union) said cultural similarities and geographical proximity facilitates cooperation between Vietnam, Hong Kong and the Hong Kong - Guangdong - Macao (China) region in various fields, especially trade, investment and tourism.

Given recent development achievements of each side, we believe that there will be a lot of room for bilateral cooperation, specifically in the fields of agricultural production, financial services, technology and innovation, said Jonathan.

Alger Yau, director of the Hong Kong Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, expressed the Hong Kong Administration’s wishes to support the promotion of business cooperation between the two sides in the post-pandemic period.

To strengthen cooperation among ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, he said Hong Kong has proposed joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement (RCEP), of which Vietnam is also a member. The move is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations, said Alger.

At the workshop, delegates examined new opportunities for investment cooperation between Vietnam - Hong Kong (China) and the region of Hong Kong - Guangdong - Macao).

A Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in trade and investment promotion between Vietnam and CGCC, HKVCC and GBA Union was signed at the event.
