Hanoi to launch construction of five metro lines worth US$49.4 billion
VOV.VN - Hanoi is set to simultaneously break ground on five urban railway projects linked to transit-oriented development (TOD) on June 22, with total preliminary investment estimated at more than VND1.3 quadrillion (US$49.4 billion).
The projects are seen as an important starting point in Hanoi’s roadmap to develop a modern transport network, while creating fresh impetus for the capital in the 2026-2030 period.
According to the Hanoi People’s Committee, investment in the urban railway system using public investment capital is a key task to develop a synchronised transport infrastructure network, improve high-capacity public transport services, ease traffic congestion and promote urban development under the TOD model.
Under Notice No. 523 issued by the Hanoi People’s Committee on June 17, the projects are classified as key transport infrastructure developments expected to create new momentum for growth, strengthen public transport capacity and improve the use of urban land resources.
Among the five projects, Metro Line No. 8, running from Hoa Lac to Son Dong, Mai Dich, Ring Road 3, Linh Nam and Duong Xa, has the largest scale. The line will stretch about 91 km, including 66 km within Hanoi, and connect with Hung Yen and Bac Ninh provinces. Total preliminary investment is estimated at more than VND437 trillion (US$16.6 billion).
The second-largest project by investment is Metro Line No. 1, stretching about 81 km and connecting Hung Vuong Stadium, Ngoc Hoi, Hanoi Railway Station, Yen Vien and Noi Bai Airport. The entire line is planned to run underground, with total investment estimated at nearly VND390 trillion (US$14.8 billion).
Metro Line No. 2 will link Noi Bai Airport with Tran Hung Dao, Thuong Dinh and Hung Vuong Stadium. The line will run for about 56.5 km, with preliminary investment put at more than VND271.7 trillion (US$10.3 billion).
Metro Line No. 10 will run from Co Loa via Vo Chi Cong, Ring Road 3, Ring Road 2.5 and Times City before looping back to Co Loa. The line will stretch about 43 km, with preliminary investment reaching more than VND206.7 trillion (US$7.9 billion).
Metro Line No. 14 will extend from Thang Long Bridge to Ocean Park over roughly 32 km, including 27 km within Hanoi. Initial investment is projected at nearly VND154 trillion (US$5.9 billion).
Under the preliminary plan, most sections of the five lines will be built underground and integrated with transit-oriented urban development. The city is set to finalize all five projects by 2030.
Details on routes, scale and total investment will be further refined during the planning, appraisal and approval process.
