Hanoi aims for up to 7.5% economic growth in 2022

VOV.VN - The capital of Hanoi will mobilise all resourses and fully tap into its available development potential in a bid to secure economic growth of between 7% and 7.5% next year, said Mayor Chu Ngoc Anh at the Municipal Party Committee’s year-end meeting on December 1.

Anh, who is also Vice Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, said that in order to meet the target, Hanoi will promote digital transformation and digital economy, accelerate administrative reform, focus on disease prevention and control, and invest heavily in grassroots-level health care.

The plan will prioritise greater resources to be spent on culture, health, and education, and ramp up the implementation of key infrastructure construction projects, including the Nhon - Hanoi railway station as part of the urban railway project.

The Mayor of Hanoi admitted that the last year has been a challenging period for both Vietnam and the capital in particular following the resurgence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that has taken its heavy toll on all aspects of life.

Hanoi has fulfilled 16 out of a total of 23 key socio-economic development targets set for the year. Among the incomplete targets, the capital is likely to secure economic growth of 2.35% to 3%, which is far below the estimated target of 7.5%.

However, there are bright spots ahead in Hanoi’s overall socio-economic development picture, with its budget revenue collection surpassing the set target by 2.7% to ensure continued spending on development investment and other tasks, including COVID-19 prevention and control, stressed the Mayor.

According to Anh, the capital has disbursed a range of relief packages to support employees and employers, as well as needy people who have been hard hit by the prolonged COVID-19 outbreak.

Meanwhile, the agricultural sector has maintained a stable growth rate, continuing to affirm its role as the ‘supporting pillar’ of the economy. In addition, industrial production is gradually picking up steam following a hiatus caused by social distancing measures taken against COVID-19.

The Hanoi leader expressed his belief that with drastic COVID-19 prevention and control measures in place, the coronavirus outbreak will swiftly be brought under control and the local economy will be up and running in 2022.
