GoRice launched to advance sustainable, low-emission rice production
VOV.VN - Vietnam has launched a Canadian-funded project to develop sustainable, low-emission and climate-resilient rice value chains in the Mekong Delta, targeting 48,200 farmers, including 50% women, and aiming to reduce carbon emissions by around 748,000 tonnes.
The launch ceremony was held in Can Tho on October 28 by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the Institute of Agricultural Environment (IAE), Oxfam in Vietnam, and the Departments of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang and Vinh Long provinces and Can Tho City.
The project, titled “'Enhancing Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Low-Emission Rice Value Chains” (GoRice), is funded by the Government of Canada and will run through 2030 in Can Tho, Vinh Long and An Giang.
It aims to bring direct benefits to 48,200 farmers, half of them women, while helping 180,000 hectares of cultivated land adopt high-quality, low-emission farming practices. It also targets benefits for 100,000 consumers and an estimated reduction of around 748,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.
Key activities include training farmers in low-emission cultivation techniques, promoting the circular economy, developing markets for low-emission rice and encouraging changes in consumer behaviour.
The project will also establish a framework for measuring, reporting and verifying (MRV) greenhouse gas emissions to support the development of carbon markets. Other priorities include strengthening the role of women, young people and ethnic minority communities, as well as expanding access to green technologies and green finance.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, VCCI Vice President Hoang Quang Phong stressed that the project would focus on strengthening links between businesses and cooperatives, facilitating access to green finance, promoting consumption of low-emission rice, and expanding markets for high-quality rice.
