Fruit and vegetable exports to EU soar 33% in four months

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports to the European Union in the first four months of the year reached US$132 million, marking a year-on-year rise of 33%, reports the Vietnam Customs.

Among key export items, mango topped the list with US$27.6 million in revenue (up 54%), followed by pistachios with US$17 million (up 90%). Pineapple exports to the EU tripled to US$11 million, while coconut sales rose 41% to US$10 million.

The Netherlands remained the largest EU importer of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables, purchasing nearly US$37 million, or around 28% of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable exports to the bloc. Other markets also recorded strong growth, including Poland (doubling year-on-year), Spain (up 83%), and Germany and France (double-digit increases).

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Vietnamese produce is increasingly favoured by EU consumers thanks to improved quality and compliance with the bloc’s strict standards. In addition, a strong recovery in EU consumer demand has significantly boosted export volumes.

Moreover, unfavorable weather has also led to a decline in fruit output in several EU countries, making the region more reliant on imports, including from Vietnam. Notably, tariff advantages under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) continue to play a vital role in promoting fruit and vegetable exports to this demanding market.

In 2024, Vietnam’s agricultural exports to the EU hit a record US$4.21 billion, with the fruit and vegetable exports enjoying double-digit growth, driven by a rebound in consumer demand.

Experts forecast substantial room for growth in Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports to the bloc. However, to fully capitalise on these opportunities, Vietnamese businesses must strictly comply with regulations on traceability, product quality, and food safety, all of which are key requirements in the EU market.
