Fruit and vegetable exports near US$5 billion
VOV.VN - Fruit and vegetable exports continued to enjoy impressive growth among Vietnam's "billion dollar" export products, reaching US$ 4.9 billion during the nearly past 10 months, a rise of more than 78% on-year, the highest increase ever, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
In addition to growth in such major markets as China, the Republic of Korea, and Japan, some Vietnamese fruits exported to the European market are also predicted to increase sharply compared to the same period from last year such as passion fruit, dragon fruit, coconut, pineapple and soursop.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien, to increase the value of the fruit and vegetable industry, it is essential to create favorable conditions for investors to engage in deep processing as a means of reducing post-harvest losses and increasing product value many times compared to current fresh fruit and vegetable exports.
He also underscored the need to adopt policy mechanisms and administrative reforms which are key factors in creating an open investment environment.
Besides efforts to meet quality standards, the industry will go ahead with negotiation to help Vietnamese fruit and vegetables make inroad into potential markets, especially high-value ones.
“The export growth rate has seen drastic changes since the beginning of the third quarter. In the coming time, the MARD will focus on solutions and make flexible adjustments in trade promotion activities as well as dealing with practical problems to ensure this year's growth target", Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien added.
