Forum seeks ways to tap into Southeast Asian Halal market

VOV.VN - A forum opened with the theme of “Cooperation and Development on Halal industry in ASEAN” on October 31 in Ho Chi Minh City to help Vietnamese businesses seize upon opportunities to participate more deeply in the supply chain of Halal goods.

Upon addressing the event, Vo Van Hoan, vice chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, emphasized that the event provides an ideal venue in which enterprises can strengthen export activities, whilst also tightening the friendly relationship between Vietnam and Muslim countries in the ASEAN region.

For his part, Jason Yeo, vice president for Singapore Chamber of Commerce Vietnam in Vietnam, revealed that the country and Singapore signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last year to help distribute Halal food products in respective markets.

He emphasised that the Singapore Chamber of Commerce Vietnam will facilitate further trade connectivity and transfer food technologies to Vietnam, as well as working closely with the Singapore Business Association Vietnam and Singapore Business Federation in order to establish dialogues and strengthen co-operation with Vietnamese businesses.

Ly Kim Chi, chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City Food Association, advised local firms to meet the growing area standards in terms of Global GAP and Organic, as well as attaining GMP, ISO, and HACCP certificates before exporting goods to these markets.

The global market for halal products boasts huge potential, with more than two billion Muslims around the world. In particular, Muslim people make up the majority in the regional bloc.

According to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the global Muslim community’s spending on Halal food is expected to reach US$1,900 billion in 2024 and US$15,000 billion in 2050.
