Forestry, seafood industries told to enhance competitiveness towards tough targets

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on April 13 told the forestry and seafood industries to increase product quality and competitive capacity toward earning US$17.5 billion and US$10 billion in export turnover respectively this year.

Addressing a meeting with the leadership of the two industries in Hanoi, Chinh affirmed that the production, processing and export of forest and fishery products play an important role in the national economy, accounting for 53.8% of the total export turnover of agricultural products.

Amid global market difficulties, the PM requested that the two industries keep a close watch on market trends and changes to trade, investment and monetary policies to make in-depth analysis and draw up appropriate response plans.

He asked them to effectively implement free trade agreements Vietnam signed with other partners to expand export outlets overseas, including niche markets, fully exploit the domestic market of 100 million consumers, and especially ramp up digital transformation, considering it a breakthrough in boosting steady export.

The PM assigned the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with relevant agencies and localities to work out solutions to deal with the EU’s IUU yellow card for Vietnamese seafood exported to the bloc. He reminded the ministry to develop policies to promote public-private cooperation, build large-scale breeding farms, and encourage innovation in production and processing.

He asked other ministries in charge of finance, trade, investment, science-technology, and natural resources, to consider support policies for businesses in terms of taxes and fees, land use rights, brand and trade promotion, trade lawsuits, loans and interest rates, and high-tech application.

Last year, the whole agricultural sector achieved spectacular growth, exceeding the set target. The production and processing of wood and forest products raked in US$17.1 billion in export turnover, up 7.1% compared to 2021, while seafood processors brought in US$11 billion, up 23.8% over the same period in 2021.
